Welcome to this week’s Bible study. Today, we are diving deep into the true scriptural meaning of 2 Corinthians 5:7.
1. The Biblical Context: Eternal Glory vs. Earthly Affliction
To fully understand verse 7, we must look at the context of Paul’s letter. In 2 Corinthians 4 and 5, Paul is describing the intense physical trials, persecution, and mortality of human life. He speaks of our physical bodies as "earthly tents"—temporary, fragile, and fading away.
When Paul writes that "we walk by faith, not by sight," he is teaching us that our physical senses ("sight") only see the temporary, decaying world around us. "Sight" observes present suffering, hardship, and fear. But "faith" grasps what God has promised: eternal glory, resurrection, and an everlasting home with Christ (2 Corinthians 5:1–5).
2. Biblical "Walk" (Halakhah)
Throughout Scripture, the word "walk" is used to describe a person's entire lifestyle, conduct, and direction (Psalm 1:1, Ephesians 4:1). It is a slow, steady, step-by-step journey—not a sprint.
Walking by faith means that every single step of your daily life is governed by God’s revealed truth, not by changing emotions or physical circumstances. It reflects Abraham, who "went out, not knowing where he was going" because he trusted God’s promise (Hebrews 11:8), and Peter, who stepped onto the water only while keeping his eyes fixed on Jesus (Matthew 14:29-30).
3. Faith Is Not Blind; It Is Fixed on God’s Word
Scriptural faith is not wishful thinking or a blind guess. In Hebrews 11:1, faith is defined as "the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." Walking by faith means placing total trust in the unshakeable character and promises of God.
While our human "sight" focuses on what is visible and temporary, our "faith" rests on God’s eternal Word, which never fails (Isaiah 40:8).
